Question 667091: three times a first number decreased by a second is -29 the first number increased by four times the second number is 12 find the numbers
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
first number =x
second number = y
3x-y=-29...................(1)
x+4y=12 ....................(2)
multiply equation (1) by 4
we get 12x-4y=-116
add this to (2)
13x=-104
/13
x= -8
plug x in (1)
3x-y =-29
3(-8)-y=-29
-24-y=-29
-y=-29+24
-y=-5
y=5
The numbers are -8 & 5
