The sum of 4 consecutive 3 digit numbers is 866. What are the 4 numbers? Explain your strategy.
-----------------------
866/4 = 216.5, the center
Two integers are less than 216.5, 2 or more.
--> 215, 216, 217 & 218
---------------------------
The hard way:
n + n+1 + n+2 + n+3 = 866
4n + 6 = 866
4n = 860
n = 215
--> same answer

**
let x=1st consecutive number
x+1=2nd consecutive number
x+2=3rd consecutive number
x+3=4th consecutive number
They are all supposed to add up to 866
x+(x+1)+(x+2)+(x+3)=866
4x+6=866
4x=860
x=860/4
x=215
1st consecutive number=215
2nd consecutive number=216
3rd consecutive number=217
4th consecutive number=218
Its great 6th graders are learning this stuff. I did not learn this stuff until I was in high school.

Hi,
The idea is consecutive numbers algebraically start with x and go Up one for each consecutive other.
(regardless of the sizes of the numbers) That is to say the fact they are 3-digit numbers has nothing to do with the Set UP
4 consecutive numbers:,,,
Question states***
x + (x+1) + (x+2) + (x+3) = 866
4x + 6 = 866
4x = 860
x = 215
the 4 numbers are 215, 216, 217, 218
and...
= 866
