One number is five more than twice another number 

The two numbers add to 29.

Question states***

  x + (2x+5) = 29

     3x = 24

      x = 8, the samller number. Larger is 21.

Equation:

x = 2y+5

x + y = 29

Substitute for "x" and solve for "y":

2y+5 + y = 29

3y = 24

y = 8

Solve for "x":

x = 2y + 5

x = 16+5

x = 21
