The problem is:
Let n = "a number"
Just write an equation for what it says:
Three times the difference of a number and two is one more than twice the number
3(n - 2) = 2n + 1
3n - 6 = 2n + 1
3n - 2n = 1 + 6
n = 7 is the number
:
:
See if that checks out in the statement
3(7-2) = 2(7) + 1
3(5) = 14 + 1
