Question 607869: if a>0, x^2+y^2=a, and xy=a-10, what is (x+y)^2 in terms of a?
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x+y)^2 = (x+y)(x+y)

(x+y)^2 = x^2 + 2xy + y^2

(x+y)^2 = (x^2 + y^2) + 2(xy)

(x+y)^2 = a + 2(a-10)

(x+y)^2 = a + 2a-20

(x+y)^2 = 3a-20
