Question 604682: the sume of twice a number and 16 less than the number is the same as the difference between -32 and the number. what is the number
Answer by alicealc(293) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the number = x
the number must be positive, because a difference must be a positive number
2x + x - 16 = x - (-32)
3x - 16 = x + 32
3x - x = 32 + 16
2x = 48
x = 48/2 = 24
or
2x + x - 16 = -32 - x
3x - 16 = -32 - x
3x + x = -32 + 16
4x = -16
x = -16/4 = -4
because the number must be positive, then the number is 24
