Question 596920: One number is 3 less than a second number. Half the first number plus the second number is equal to the square of 6. Find the numbers.
I tried:
First number = x-3
second number = x
x-3/2 + 2x/2 = sqrt (6)
but that did not work!

Answer by rfer(16322)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x-3)/2+x=36
0.5x-1.5+x=36
1.5x=36+1.5
1.5x=37.5
x=37.5/1.5
x=25
x-3=22
