The sum of two numbers is 33. Their differeence is 7. What are the two numbers?
Let one number be: x
Let the other be: y
x+y=33
x-y=7 -->x=7+y substitute that in for x in the first equation and solve for y.
:
(7+y)+y=33
7+y+y=33
7+2y=33
-7+7+2y=-7+33
2y=26
2y/2=26/2
y=13 substitute that in for y in the second equation and solve for x.
x-(13)=7
x-13=7
x-13+13=7+13
x=20
Therefore one number is 13 and the other is 20.
