larger number = x
smaller number = y

One number is four less than three times another
x=3y-4........(1)
If their sum is increased by five, the result is twenty-five
x+y+5=25
x+y=25-5
x+y=20............(2)
Put the value of x from (1) to (2)
3y-4+y=20
4y=20+4
4y=24
4y/4=24/4
y=6
Put the value of y in (1)
x=3y-4........(1)
x=3(6)-4
x=18-4
x=14
Numbers are 14 and 6
