The difference between two whole numbers is 18. If the larger number is 5 more than twice the smaller number, what is their sum?
----
Equations:
x - y = 18
x = 2y+5
----
Substitute and solve for "y":
2y+5 -y = 18
y + 5 = 18
y = 13
-------
Solve for "x":
x - y = 18
x - 13 = 18
x = 31
