the sum of 3*x and 7 more than x = the difference between -11 and twice x
3*x+(x+7)=-11-2x
3x+x+7=-11-2x
combine like terms
4x+7=-11-2x
add 2x to both sides
6x+7=-11
subtract 7 from both sides
6x=-18
divide both sides by 6
x=-3
