Number Problem: If one-half of one integer is subtracted from three-fifths of the next consecutive integer, the difference is 3. What are the two integers?

Answer by tutorcecilia(2152)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = 1st consecutive integer
x+1=2nd consecutive integer
.
(3/5)(x+1)-(1/2)(x)=3

3/5x+3/5-1/2x=3
3/5x-1/2x=-3/5+3
1/10x=12/5
x=120/5
x=24
.
24 = 1st consecutive integer
24+1=25 = 2nd consecutive integer
.
Check by plugging (x=24) into the original equation:
(3/5)(24+1)-(1/2)(24)=3
3=3 [checks out]
