Question 551451: Twice of larger number equals three times the smaller number and their sum is 40.find the numbers.
Answer by oberobic(2304)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + y = 40
x = 40-y
.
2x = 3y
x = 3y/2 = 3/2*y
.
x = x
so
40-y = 3y/2
.
cross multiply
.
2(40-y) = 3y
80 -2y = 3y
80 = 5y
y = 16
.
x = 40-y
x = 40-16
x = 24
.
Does 2x=3y?
2*24=48
3*16=48
Correct.
.
Answer: x=24, y=16
.
Done.
