Let x = the number to satisfy the inequality
...
Given: 5x < 4(x + 1)
...
5x < 4(x + 1)
5x < 4x + 4
...
subtract 4x from both sides
5x - 4x < 4x - 4x + 4
x < 4
...
x < 4 satisfies the inequality; however, the question asks for the largest integer that satisfies the inequality...
...
Therefore, x must be equal to or less than 3

if five times a number is less than four times the number increased by one, what is the largest integer that will satisfy this condition
Let the number be N
Then: 5N < 4N + 1
5N - 4N < 1
The largest integer that will satisfy this condition is: since this number is the largest integer that's less than 1.
