Question 522870: the sum of two numbers is 18. if twice the smaller number is 6 more than the larger, find the two numbers.

Let x = smaller number
Let y = larger number
x + y = 18 ... represents the sum of two numbers
2x = y + 6 .... twice smaller is 6 more than the larger
Solve using system of equations:
1) x + y = 18
2) 2x = y + 6
1) x + y = 18
2) 2x - y = 6
3x = 24 ... add the two equations ... the y variables cancel out...
3x/3 = 24/3
x = 8 ... smaller number
1) x + y = 18
8 + y = 18
y = 18 - 8
y = 10 .... larger number
