Flying with the wind, an airplane can travel 1080 miles in 6 hours, but flying against the wind it goes only 1/3 the distance in half the time. Find the speed of the plane in still air and the wind speed.
-----------------------------------
With-wind: rate = distance/time = 1080/6 = 180 mph
Against-wind: rate = distance/time = 360/3 = 120 mph
---------------------------------------
Equations:
p + w = 180
p - w = 120
----
Add and solve for "p":
2p = 300
p = 150 (speed of the plane with no wind)
----
Solve for "w":
p + w = 180
150 + w = 180
w = 30 mph (speed of the wind)
