"One number is seven more than twice another. If their sum is decreased by nine, the result is thirteen. Find the numbers."
x = one number
2x + 7 = other number {one number is seven more than twice another}
x + 2x + 7 - 9 = 13 {if their sum is decreased by 9, the result is 13}
3x - 2 = 13 {combined like terms}
3x = 15 {added 2 to both sides}
x = 5 {divided both sides by 3}
2x + 7 = 17 {substituted 5, in for x, into 2x + 7}
5 and 17 are the two numbers
