Question 48984: A highway in a large Western state is straight as an arrow and runs in an east-west direction. There are mile markers set one mile apart on the highway. They are numbered beginning with mile 1, one mile from the eastern border of the state, to mile 300, on the western border.
A state policeman patrols a certain stretch of the road and often needs to know where he is. Sometimes he remembers a mile marker, but at other times he just remembers how far he has traveled east or west.
The policeman starts at a mile marker 44 and travels 21 miles east to a traffic jam. He then travels seven more miles east where he stops to pick up litter along the road. he then drives 17 miles west to look for a lost dog. he then drives four miles east to a stalled car. at what mile marker was the stalled car?
Answer by Nate(3500) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
As you head west, the number on the markers increase because the number starts on the east border and increase west until the western border.
When you go west, your mile marker numbers increase (add).
When you go east, your mile marker numbers decrease (subtract).
44 - 21 - 7 + 17 - 4 = 29
