Question 485518: one number is 4 less than 3 times another. Their sum is 16. Find the smaller
Answer by John10(297)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x be the smaller number
then the bigger number is: y = 3x - 4
The sum is 16:
x + y = 16
But y = 3x - 4
x + 3x - 4 = 16
4x = 20
x = 20/4
x = 5
Thus the smaller number is 5.
