two numbers differ by 10. The larger number is 6 less than twice the smaller number. Find the numbers.
Solution;
let x - the larger number
y - the smaller number
from the first phrase,
x - y = 10 ---- (1)
from the second phrase,
x = 2y - 6 ----(2)
then, substitute the value of x in (2) into (1),
2y - 6 - y = 10
y = 10 + 6
y = 16
for x:
x = 2y - 6
x = 2(16)-6
x = 26
and finally,
x = 26 and y = 16 <----- answer
