x - y = 4
5x = 3y+4

Substitute for "x" and solve for "y":
5(y+4) = 3y+4
5y + 20 = 3y + 4
2y = -16
y = -8

x +8 = 4
x = -4

The difference of two numbers is 4. 5 times the smaller number is four more than three times the larger. Find the two numbers.
Let x = the smaller number
y = the larger number

Equations:
y-x = 4
5x = 4+3y
--------------------------------
Substitute y in terms of x to get
5x = 4+ 3(4+x)
5x = 4 + 12 + 3x
2x = 16
x = 8
y = 8+4
y = 12
The two numbers are 8 & 12.
