The sum of two numbers is 59. If the sum of 12 and twice the first number is four more than the second number, what are the numbers?
---
Equations:
x + y = 59
12+2x = y+4
----
Rearrange to get:
x + y = 59
2x- y = -8
---------------
Add and solve for "x":
3x = 51
x = 17 (1st number)
---
Solve for "y":
17 + y = 59
y = 42 (2nd number)
