Question 4513: The sum of two numbers is 133. Four times the smaller of the two numbers equal three times the greater number. Find the numbers.

Variable S for the smaller and variable L for the greater number.
S+L=133
4S=3L
Solve the first equation for either variable:
S=-L+133
substitute into the second equation:
4(-L+133)=3L
Distributive property:
-4L+532=3L
Add 4L to both sides:
532=7L
Divide both sides by 7:
L=76
S=-76+133
S=57
L=76 S=57
