find two numbers whose difference is 18 and 1/4 of whose sum is 9.
:
Two numbers, x & y
:
"difference is 18"
x - y = 18
:
and 1/4 of whose sum is 9.
(x + y) = 9
multiply both sides by 4
x + y = 4(9)
x + y = 36
add to the 1st equation
x - y = 18
x + y = 36
-----------adding eliminates y find x
2x = 54
x =
x = 27
then
27 + y = 36
y = 36 - 27
y = 9
:
:
Check solution in original 2nd equation
(27 + 9) =
(36) = 9
