Answer by adamchapman(301) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Votes for winner = W
Votes for loser = L
Total number of votes = W + L = 810
The winning candidate had 220 more votes than the loser:
W=L+220
substitute into the first equation for W:
(L+220)+L=810
2L+220=810
2L=590
L=295
Recalling that W+L=220,
W+295=810
W=515
So the winner got 515 votes and the loser had 295 votes.
I hope this helps
