Let the smaller number be a and the other number b.
1) a+b = 80 "The sum of two numbers is 80."
2) 3a = b+48 "3X the smaller number is 48 more than the other number."
Rewrite equation 2) as: b = 3a-48 and substitute this for b in equation 1).
1a) a+3a-48 = 80 Simplify.
1b) 4a = 128 Divide by 4.
1c) a = 32 and b = 48
