you can show this in a easy equation like this where N=Number
4N-8=N+1
on the left we have eight less than four times a number because it is 8 less than 4N. on the right side we have the number increased by one which is just N+1. since both sides are equal if we do the same thing to both sides it will still be equal so lets add 8 to both sides...
4N-8=N+1
+8 +8
4N=N+9
now lets minus N from each side
4N=N+9
-N -N
3N=9
now devide both sides by 3 to get your answer
3N=9
/3 /3
N=3
