Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
"The sum of 2 numbers is 61. The numbers are 5 apart. What are they?"
x = one number
x - 5 = other number
x + x - 5 = 61 {sum of the two numbers is 61}
2x - 5 = 61 {combined like terms}
2x = 66 {added 5 to both sides}
x = 33 {divided both sides by 2}
x - 5 = 28 {substituted 33, in for x, into x - 5}
33 and 28 are the two numbers
