if I reading this right
let x be the number
20 more than twice a number = 2x + 20
2x + 20 and -4 --> 2x + 20 - 4 = 2x + 16
2x + 16 less 8 --> 2x + 16 - 8 = 2x + 8
2x + 8 = -42
2x = -50
x = -25
