one number is eight more than twice another and their sum is 20. what are their number?
one number = x = 2y+8
another number = y
so, (2y+8)+ y=20
simplify 3y+8=20
3y=20-8
3y=12
y=4,
checking the answer gives x=2(4)+8=16
so, y = 4 and x = 16
4+16=20
