Let x = length of one piece
then
(2/5)x = length of second piece
.
x + (2/5)x = 56
multiply both sides by 5:
5x + 2x = 5*56
7x = 5*56
x = (5*56)/7
x = 5*8
x = 40 feet (one piece)

(2/5)x = (2/5)40 = 16 feet

Let x be the length of one pipe, and by condition the other piece should be 2/5 of the first piece
Hence
x+(2/5)x= 60
simplifying
5x+2x = 300
7x = 300
x=300/7 = 42.85714286
