Question 28714: Diophantus, the father of algebra, told this when ask his age. My youth lasted one-sixth of my life. I grew a beard after one-twelfth more. After another one-seventh, I married. Five years later I had a son. My son lived half as long as i did and then i died 4 years after my son. How old was i when i died?
I think the Variavles at death and 2x+4 at is father age at death but i cant setup the equation to solve.

let x be the age
---> multiply the whole equation by 84

14x+7x+12x+420+336=42x
33x+756=42x
9x=756
x=84

Hence, he lived for 84 years.

Let x = Diophantus' age.

1/6x + 1/12x +1/7x +1/2x + 5 + 4 = x
9 = -1/6x -1/12x -1/7x -1/2x + x
9 = 9/84x
756 = 9x
84 = x
