Question 285237: The sum of two numbers is 15. The result when the greater number is decreased by three times the lesser is 7. Let x be the greater number and let y be the lesser number. write a system of equations to model this situation.
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x is greater
y is lesser
Now we are told that:
x+y=15---------------------eq1
We are also told that:
x-3y=7------------------------eq2
Subtract eq2 from eq1 and we get:
4y=8 divide each side by 4
y=2--lesser number
From eq 1:
x+2=15
x=13-------------greater number
CK
2+13=15
15=15
and
13-3*2=7
13-6=7
7=7
Hope this helps---ptaylor
