Question 27438: I need your help to show the algebraic, (if there's such a word), formula for the following.
There are 20 children in a class. There are 8 more boys than girls. How many boys and girls are there in the class?
I know the answer, I just don't know how to get there. I know there are 6 girls and 14 boys in the class. Please help. I believe the answer is right under my nose but just can't grasp it.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let b = number of boys.
therefore the number of girls = b-8

and also, boys + girls = 20
--> b + b-8 = 20
2b - 8 = 20
2b = 28
b = 28/2
b = 14

and so number of girls is 14-8 ---> 6
