three items cost $124... sweater was 8/7 cost of the skirt, shoes cost $8 less than the skirt.
.
Let x = cost of skirt
then
(8/7)x = cost of sweater
x-8 = cost of shoes
.
x + (8/7)x + x-8 = 124
2x + (8/7)x -8 = 124
2x + (8/7)x = 132
14x + 8x = 7*132
22x = 7*132
22x = 924
x = $42 (skirt)
.
sweater:
(8/7)x = (8/7)42 = $48
.
shoes:
x-8 = 42-8 = $34
