Let the greater number = x
Let the other number = y
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
"one number is greater than double another number by 15.
x = 2y + 15
;
If their sum is 54,
x + y = 54
find the smaller of the two numbers by setting up an equation and solving it.
Substitute (2y+15) for x in the above equation
2y + 15 + y = 54
3y = 54 - 15
3y = 39
y =
y = 13 is the smaller number
