Well if 'a' and 'b' are both integers, then ab ('a' times 'b') is also an integer because the product of two integers is always an integer. Because , this means that if we multiply both sides by ab. Since 1 is the only factor of 1, this tells us that 1=1*1 and that a=1 and b=1.
