40/2 = 20.
One is above, one below --> 19 and 21.

You can do it the hard way:
n + (n+2) = 40
2n + 2 = 40
2n = 38
n = 19 --> 19 & 21

Firstly, the word consecutive means, one after the other.
For example, 3,5, 7, 9 are a set of consecutive odd numbers.
In this case, since there are two numbers we can divide 40 into 2 and get;
40/2 = 20
The consective odd numbers nearest to 20 is your answer.
That is 19 and 21
Note, 19+21 = 40.
