3^1 = 3
3^2 = 9
3^3 = 27
3^4 = 81
3^5 = 243
3^6 = 729
3^7 = 2187

the pattern for the units digit repeats 1-3-9-7 (or 3-9-7-1 if you start at 3^1)

2009 / 4 = 502, with a remainder of 1
