Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
One number is 6 less than another. Three times the smaller is 12 more than twice the larger. Find the numbers.
---------------------------------------
Let the larger number be "x":
Equations:
y = x-6
3y = 2x+12
------------------
Substitute for "y" and solve for "x":
3(x-6) = 2x+12
3x-18 = 2x+12
x = 30 (larger number)
y = x-6 = 24 (smaller number)
