The difference of two numbers is 19. The larger number is 3 more than twice the smaller. Find the numbers.
----------------------------------
Equations:
x - y = 19
Comment: This means x is the larger number.
-------
x = 2y+3
-------
Substitute for "x" in the 1st equation and solve for "y":
(2y+3) - y = 19
y + 3 = 19
y = 16
---------------
Since x = 2y+3, x = 2*16+3 ; x = 35
-------------------------------------------
The numbers are 16 and 35
