We need 2 Equations with 2 Variables.
Consecutive even numbers have a difference of 2. For example, 4-2=2. 6-4=2,8-6=2.
Let x= the larger number
Let y= the smaller number
I assumed that "diminished by twenty" means subtract 20.
Eqn 1: x-y=2
Eqn 2: 2y-20=x
Eqn 1: x=2+y
Sub this into Eqn 2:
2y-20=2+y
y=22
Sub this answer into Eqn 1:
x-22=2
x=24
The two numbers are 24 and 22.
