Write an equation for each phrase:

3x - 4y = 7
:
"the larger is one less than two times the smaller"
x = 2y - 1

Use the above equation for substitution in the 1st equation; replace x:
3(2y-1) - 4y = 7
6y - 3 - 4y = 7
6y - 4y = 7 + 3
2y = 10
y = 5

x = 2y -1
x = 2(5) = 1
