The units digit of a two-digit number is 5 more than the tens digit. If the sum of the digits is 8 less than one-half of the number, find the number.
-------
Let the number be 10t+u
-------------
Equations:
u = t+5
u+t = (1/2)(10t+u)-8
-------------------------
Substitute for "u" and solve for "t":
t+5+t = (1/2)(10t+t+5)-8
Multiply thru by 2 to get rid of the fraction:
4t + 10 = 11t+5-16
7t = 21
t = 3 (this is the ten's digit)
------
Since u = t+5, u = 8 (this is the unit's digit)
-----------------------
Ans: 10t+u = 38
