let B = beth's age.
3*J = 8*B
J - B = 15

if J - B = 15, then J = B+15
your formula of 3*J = 8*B becomes 3*(B+15) = 8*B after you substitute B+15 for J.

Solving for B gets you B = 9
This makes J = 9 + 15 = 24
3 * 24 = 72
8 * 9 = 72
