Write an equation for the 1st statement (like you did)
h + c = 496
:
Write another equation for the statement:
"There were 54 fewer cheeseburgers sold than hamburgers."
c = h - 54

Substitute (h-54) for c in the 1st equation
h + (h-54) = 496
2h = 496 + 54
