Question 188462: In a carnival game, you gain $2 if you win and lose $1 if you do not win, if someone plays 30 times and has a net loss of $6, how many wins were there?
I figured out that the answer is 8 wins,,by trial and error ,,but I do not know how to set up the equation.

Let x be the number of wins. Then, if there were 30 plays, there must have been 30 - x losses. The total amount returned would be $2 times the number of wins minus $1 times the number of losses, and this must be equal to -$6:
Check:
8 wins returns $16. 30 - 8 = 22 losses loses $22. $16 - $22 = -$6.
