Question 172721: please help me, i'm really confused. what is the step by step way of solving this problem. Four times a number reduced by three is not more than three times the number added to five. Find the numbers. i really need your help. thanks and God bless!
Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let your number be x.
Four times your number is then 4x and that reduced by 3 is 4x - 3
Three times the number is 3x and that added to 5 is 3x + 5
Since is not more than then it can either be less than or equal because neither less than nor equal is more than.
Hence:
Add -3x to both sides:
Add 3 to both sides:
So any number less than or equal to 8 will satisfy the given relationship.
Check:
Try 8
Checks
Try a number less than 8, like 7
Checks
Try a number larger than 8
and Checks because a number larger than 8 makes the statement false.
