H = 3P
:
Jeff has $4 less than Hilary"
J = H - 4
Substitute 3P for H
J = 3P - 4
:
"and $5 more than Paul"
J = P + 5
:
rearrange these two equations
J - 3P = -4
J - P = 5
---------------subtraction eliminates J, find P
-2P = -9
P =
P = $4.50
then
H = 3(4.5); from the 1st equation
H = $13.50
and
J = P + 5
J = 4.50 + 5
J = $9.50

Confirm this with the equation J = H - 4
J = 13.50 - 4
J = $9.50
