Question 147234: When 3 times the sum of 4 and an unknown number is subtracted from 10 times the unknown number, the results is equal to 5 time the sum of 9 and twice the unknown number. Find the number. My equation is: 3(4+x) = 5(9+2x). When I solve this I get a fraction, which does not work. You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You're on the right track, but you forgot to include the portion "is subtracted from 10 times the unknown number". So the equation should be

10x-3(4+x) = 5(9+2x)

10x-12-3x=45+10x Distribute.

7x-12=45+10x Combine like terms on the left side.

7x=45+10x+12 Add 12 to both sides.

7x-10x=45+12 Subtract 10x from both sides.

-3x=45+12 Combine like terms on the left side.

-3x=57 Combine like terms on the right side.

x=(57)/(-3) Divide both sides by -3 to isolate x.

x=-19 Reduce.

Answer:

So the answer is x=-19 which means that the unknown number is -19.
